Summary of what happened: We gathered at my house to discuss what to do; Mank was still lying unconcious on the floor from his interrogation, half of the party was there discussing what to do, and the rest of the party came back from visiting Rag Vorn and the orcs in the mine tunnels. After some discussion of various plans, we settled on tracking the T'Skrang who had been watching us at the mineshaft entrance. We did; his trail led to the mansion of the T'Skrang Queen Mother. There the trail split; it was apparent that he had left and come back and left again, but not which trail was fresher, so the party split to follow both. One trail led to the Troll tunnels. It led through the troll village, and into a blind wall. The party discovered that some trolls are apparently experimenting with building ships of some kind. Also, this trail indicated either a very effective illusion of false wall, or some sort of magical travel on the part of the T'Skrang, since it ended with footprints leading into a wall. It also implied some sort of concealment ability on his part, or some arrangement with the trolls, since a T'Skrang wandering through trolltown would not normally escape unscathed. The other trail led to the council chambers, where the T'Skrang was listening at the door. We chatted with him, establishing that his name was Catan, and that he worked for the T'Skrang Queen Mother at the moment. Listening at the door of the council chambers, we heard that they planned to round everyone up and herd them into the water tunnels, seal them off, and have their elementalists purify the air while they sent brute squads out to scour the Caer for anyone who didn't go along with the plan and for the true elements needed to repair the air filter. They planned to search people as they were sent in, and probably to do harsh things to anyone they didn't like, once everyone was in one place and unarmed. A dwarf thanked the council for inviting the librarians to give them guidance, and said Jesper would be happy to help them. A third portion of the party stayed behind to watch the T'Skrang Queen Mother's mansion to see if he returned or anything else happened. They observed a litter being constructed to carry the Queen Mother. We regathered and discused this turn of events. We decided that we needed to warn Rag Vorn of the danger he would soon be facing from the brute squads and/or asphyxiation from not being invited into the water tunnels. I and Eleia went to do that. H'azard returned to the library to ask them for guidance. Much of the rest of the party went to attempt to recover the map from the tower of the council chamber, since leaving might soon be a clever plan. I believe I am missing some information about what went on here, so someone please fill in this gap. I'm told some alarms were set off, but the party recovered the safe from the tower. Almost immediately after E'leia and I reached the bottom of the elevator shaft, someone cut the rope and summoned or imported (summoned seemed more likely) a lot of rock into the elevator shaft, destroying the elevator and filling part of the shaft. In the area at the base of the shaft, there were a large number of orcs gathered, roughly armed and organized, along with food, water, and supplies. We talked with them; they were hoping to evacuate the Caer due to the current emergency and the likely political results (i.e. the dwarven librarians taking over). E'leia used a spell to move the rock a bit at a time out of the shaft. I tied a rope to an arrow and shot it up the shaft; Vorn did something to make it hang there while some engineers climbed up. While we were doing this the rest of the party assembled at the top of the shaft. We had a long slow conversation; two subgroups were sent out to collect carts of food and water, since it was clear there were going to be problems getting the elevator to take the orcs supplies up. They returned without incident. H'azard appeared with an Elven swordsman, apparently an adept of some sort; the two of them had been assigned to one of the brute squads rounding people up and bringing them to the water tunnels. Many of the orcs took a back route out of the tunnels, which was too small for the mine carts; we rode the elevator up with some of the supplies. As the group was getting organized to move out toward the exit tunnel, it was observed that the Elven swordsman had left; I, Joan, and Zirin followed him and attempted to stop him from reporting, for fear that he would summon someone to stop the orcs. Zirin attempted to trip him and Joan circled around to get in his way; he attempted to hit Zirin with a club and Joan with his sword. While he was thus distracted, I shot him in the leg with a practice arrow; he fell to the ground. Zirin and Joan disarmed him. I took his club, which he said was a symbol of being on the brute squad. It was clear that he was not bleeding, and thus would be able to limp back to the water tunnels, or at least make enough noise to be found by a brute squad, so we left him. Zirin, Joan, and I then returned to my place to get Mank; I carried him back while they watched for trouble. The dwarven engineers burned a small hole into the safe, which revealed that it contained some papers and the true wood and orachalcum that we were looking for. Thwak then borrowed some tools and used his immense strength to pry open the safe. The papers did not include the maps of the exit tunnels, unfortunately; they all appeard to be blank. I do not think we have done enough magical investigation to see if there is any hidden writing on them, but it was speculated that they were only in there so that any scrying attempt would reveal the correct sized pile of papers. A small party consisting, I think, of K'Shrik, E'leia, and Zirin, went to talk to Catan. They tracked him down and offered to trade the wood and orachalcum for the exit map. After negotiating, they traded the wood and orachalcum for him telling everyone that we found it and saved the caer. We cleverly gave him the parts, and then argued with him and insulted him until he got pissed and left, making it seem somewhat unlikely that he will be really enthusiastic about telling everyone how wonderful we are. We discussed the dreams several of us had about leaving the Caer; people compared notes on the traps we had faced in hopes that those portions of the dream would be correct. E'leia is coordinating this effort, so everyone who remembers things should be talking to her. The day ended with us and the orcs about to face the challenges of the tunnel outward. I suspect a lot of us are getting pretty tired; I believe we should go past at least one trap before getting some serious rest, to hinder anyone following us. If I recall correctly from the dream, the first major trap is the sideways gravity section; it will take much time to stage the group and the supplies past that (and it will be painful to get the carts down...); that may be a good opportunity for us to get at least a bit of sleep. Vorn indicated that he had some way to keep people awake and alert for a long time; I suspect he will be concentrating on using that on the elementalists, though, to keep the air supply good. Conclusions: I've come to the conclusion that some of the dwarves on the council, supported by some of the higher level adepts in the caer, are behind everything in a grab for power. Why? Well, it always bothered me that with everyone's life in danger, they asked a bunch of low-level adepts to go fix things. Almost as if they wanted us to fail. And the parts were in the council safe; hardly the place that someone who wanted everyone to die would put them, but a nice place for Jesper the possibly mythical dwarf to hide them so that he could conveniently step out of the council chambers and 'find' them quickly. And the dwarf who sent us on this mission constantly refused our requests for help or information. And at least some higher level adepts were in on it, because someone had the leverage over our masters to get us sent on this mission without telling our masters what or why; also, whoever dumped the rock into the elevator shaft was probably an elementalist summoning it, since Also, we seem to have eliminated most of the other possibilities... Vorn clearly wasn't behind it, since he cleverly trapped himself in the basement when the crisis hit; he'd have been screwed if E'leia hadn't been there. Ditto for the Fury. Speaks with Stone and the Trolls weren't up to much of anything beyond shipbuilding, and from what I've heard didn't appear prepared for a crisis. It is unclear to me whether the Queen Mother had anything to do with this; Catan was clearly spying on the council on her behaf, but it seems odd that he would have mentioned the safe to us if they were the ones to stash the items there, since we probably wouldn't have spent so much time trying to get it if he hadn't repeatedly mentioned it. As far as I know, there are no organized human or elven groups, the Humble doesn't do this sort of thing, which leaves the Adepts, the Council, and the Librarians as the three organized groups remaining, and the Council isn't that organized and appeared to be legitimately panicing. I may be wrong however; feel free to counter-speculate. Lessons: The party was much more coordinated this time. We got a lot more done, some of it through luck, but most of it through teamwork. Keep it up. Yes, we split up a fair amount, but we tried to let each other know where we were going and where to meet up again, and it seemed to work well. We should try to minimize splitting up in the future, since it can lead to all sorts of problems, but when necessary, this is the way to do it. Don't always trust people who send you on missions; think for yourself, and be open to unusual solutions. Also don't prejudge people; the fury, for example, is doing all it can to save lives, despite what you may think of them... Hopefully after all we've accomplished, we will be able to rest for a little while; I think all of us have learned a lot, and will soon be able to meditate and improve our Talents. Ponder which ones have been most useful, and which might be most useful Outside.
